Why Attending Church is So Important
Why is it so important for a Christian to attend church?
Worshipping God is a commandment
As one of His Ten Commandments, God commanded that we keep the Sabbath day holy (see Exodus 20:8–11). One of the ways we keep this commandment is to meet together on Sundays to worship God and give Him thanks. We are also strengthened when we are around other believers, see their faith, and hear their experiences and testimonies.
The Sacrament helps us remember Jesus
At church, we partake of the sacrament (or Communion). Jesus commanded, “Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me” (1 Corinthians 11:24). Keeping this commandment weekly at church helps us remember what Jesus has done for us and commit to follow Him.
God’s Church relies on you
In the Bible, the Apostle Paul compared the church to a body, with Jesus as the head. He said for a body to work, every member is important and must do its part (see Ephesians 4:16). Participating in church and offering your time and talents will improve and strengthen both you and the people around you.
Church services teach and uplift
What we learn at church gives us guidance on how to follow God, improve our spirituality, and live better lives. You can be uplifted by fellow believers and by the opportunity to serve and worship. You can also feel the Holy Spirit who brings “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, [and] faith” (Galatians 5:22).
You gain a sense of belonging
Church is a community where we can socialize and support each other. You can make friends, feel a sense of belonging, and build a support network that you can rely on. The church community helps us to “mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort” (Mosiah 18:9).
God can speak to you
You can find answers at church. Maybe you’re struggling with a specific question or need some direction in your life. Maybe you just need to feel God’s love and know that He is there. As you listen to sermons and study God’s teachings, you will have opportunities to receive insight from God. He wants to communicate with you, and church is a good place to hear His voice in your heart and mind.
1. God says in His Word we should attend church regularly.
God tells us in His Word to "not give up meeting together." (Hebrews 10:25)
The Bible even goes so far as to call the Church the "Bride of Christ." If you love Jesus, you will love the things that He loves, and there is no one a good man loves more than His bride.
The Church is this important to God, so it should be ever-important to us.
God didn't call us to gather and worship to burden us, but to bless us. Church attendance can become one of the greatest blessings in you and your family's life!
2. Worshipping Jesus together at church is powerful.
Jesus lives inside of us by His Spirit when we believe in Him - this is a profoundly incredible truth!
But there is also something biblically powerful about gathering together with other believers to worship. Jesus said, "Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them." (Matthew 18:20) So he is not only lives in us by His Spirit, but He is in the "midst" of us when we gather to worship Him.
3. We need Christian community found in the church.
All of us long for community and connection with others.
God has given us this gift in gathering together for church, and in smaller groups in each other's homes. It fulfills something inside of us to do life with others, encourage each other and be authentically involved in each other's lives.
Christian TV, podcasts, books and conferences are wonderful additions to our spiritual lives, but nothing can take the place of consistent Christian community through the local church.
4. We grow more spiritually when we gather together at church, then we can all by ourselves.
It can be messy when we step into each other's lives. We are all human, and no one is perfect. So it requires effort and intentionality and grace from God to do life together, even as believers.
Gathering regularly with other believers becomes a refining process whereby we help each other, pray for each other and encourage each other to want to follow Christ more wholeheartedly. It is a truly beautiful thing.
We know attending church regularly can be challenging for some. But did you know there are quite a few benefits when you do? Here are five benefits you’ll receive by attending church regularly!
It Connects Us with God
One of the wonderful benefits of attending church regularly is the opportunity to connect with God. Maybe this seems obvious, but having a physical space to connect and draw closer to God is special. Entering a house of worship, we’re instantly elevated to a state where we’re opening ourselves up to Him and trying to understand his message. Even the simple act of walking in the doors brings you closer. And when we connect with God, He gives us His good gifts of forgiveness and love.
It Helps Us Find Deeper Meaning in Our Lives
During dark moments, there may be times in your life when you wonder, “what’s the point?” The world can be a sad place. And when we feel despair, sorrow, stress, and frustration, it’s easy to lose sight of the greater plan and purpose that’s out there. We might even feel alone and isolated from God. There is no shame in this; it happens.
But when we go to church, we’re given a greater sense of meaning and purpose. We not only see the history of what led us to this point but the promise that lies in our future even beyond this world. Attending church regularly can help you stay on track and give you reasons to keep the faith.
It Allows Us to Feel Peace
Week after week, we go through the motions of life and the chaos of every day. If you long for peace and quiet, church is a wonderful space to gain that. When we attend church, we’re transported to a place of worship and tranquility. Attending church regularly can help us revisit this peaceful state regularly. It gives us a space to pray as well as respite from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives.
It Strengthens Spiritually
When we attend church regularly, we become better worshippers. It helps us learn to focus more on God and less on ourselves. When we attend services, we receive spiritual nourishment from the Lord. This nourishment strengthens us spiritually and helps us grow in our faith.
It Fosters a Sense of Community
Church is not something we do individually, but something to be done with others. When we go to church, we encourage each other in faith and build lasting friendships. If you’re looking for a community or just want to make some friends, this is the place to do it!
