10 common Mistakes or Sins that can risk a Christian’s Eternal LIFE
What are the 10 major sins in Christianity?
Historically, the seven deadly sins (a medieval taxonomy) focused on pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth; the ten-item lists typically retain those core seven while adding or reframing items like deceit, cruelty, or idolatry of self to capture contemporary forms of spiritual corruption
Based on biblical warnings and theological perspectives regarding apostasy, falling away, and the necessity of persevering faith, here are 10 common mistakes or patterns that can risk a Christian’s eternal life, often characterized by a hard-hearted, persistent, and unrepentant abandonment of Christ.
Falling Away and Renouncing the Faith (Apostasy)The most direct threat to salvation is explicitly turning one’s back on Jesus and the gospel after having known the truth. Hebrews 6:4–6 states it is impossible to renew to repentance those who have fallen away after being enlightened.
Persistent, Willful, and Unrepentant Sin-----While all Christians sin, a deliberate, premeditated, and ongoing lifestyle of sinning—treating the cross as unnecessary—is a serious warning sign. Hebrews 10:26–27 warns, "if we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left".
Turning Back to a Worldly Lifestyle-----2 Peter 2:20–22 describes it as better never to have known the way of righteousness than to know it and then turn away, becoming entangled again in the pollution of the world.
Refusing to Forgive Others-----Jesus explicitly linked God’s forgiveness of believers to their forgiveness of others. "But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins" (Matthew 6:15).
Hard-Heartedness and Resisting the Holy Spirit------Consistently refusing to heed the conviction of the Holy Spirit can lead to a hardened heart, eventually leading to a point where a person is unable to repent, effectively blaspheming the Holy Spirit.
Trusting in Good Works Instead of Grace-----Relying on personal performance, ministry, or "good works" to merit salvation, rather than trusting in Christ's finished work, is a fatal error. Galatians 5:4 warns that those trying to be justified by the law have "fallen away from grace".
Following False Teachers and False Doctrine---- Allowing oneself to be deceived by doctrines that deviate from the original gospel, such as those that minimize the necessity of holiness, can lead believers away from the faith.
Idolatry and Loving Money More Than God-----The love of money is the root of evil and, when it becomes an idol, acts as a barrier to the kingdom of God, as indicated by Jesus’ warnings about serving money rather than God.
Failing to "Remain" in Christ----In John 15, Jesus states that a branch that does not remain in him withers, is thrown away, and burned. This indicates a loss of intimate connection and abiding faith, leading to spiritual death.
Apathy and Lack of Spiritual Growth-----Treating the spiritual life with laziness, complacency, or taking God's grace for granted is a dangerous, "boiling to death" process where a Christian loses their urgency for holiness.
